A high school student who indirectly causes a bus accident in New York first changes her statement and then tries to correct it. Nobody is as concerned as she assumes. The film does not turn guilt into a story of atonement; the narrative also shows her trying to make everyone a party to her own case and how tiring that becomes. Street noise and background conversation are deliberately brought forward. Kenneth Lonergan wrote and directed, with Anna Paquin. After shooting, disputes over the edit kept it unreleased for years and versions of different lengths went into circulation. Before watching: the longer version is markedly different and most viewers find it better. A fatal accident is also shown in detail.
