Margarita with a Straw follows a young woman with cerebral palsy finding her independence in New York; director Shonali Bose originally wanted an actress who actually has cerebral palsy but ultimately cast Kalki Koechlin, who prepared by living with Bose's cousin, who has cerebral palsy, observing her physical movements and how people around her behaved toward her. Koechlin won the Screen Award for Best Actress and a National Film Award Special Jury Award for the role, while Bose won the NETPAC Award at Toronto. Bose has said the film draws on the spirit of her own sons and on her sister Malini, who has a disability and never let it limit her. Who it's for: anyone drawn to Indian cinema that treats disability without cliché, backed by a research driven performance. Who it's not for: viewers expecting disability handled only superficially, since the film also directly addresses the character's sexuality and autonomy.
