What Amu Is About

Kaju is twenty one, an Indian American who goes back to India to see her family and to find the place where she was born. The more she looks the more the past turns into secrets and lies, and the key to her own origin turns out to lie in a massacre twenty years earlier. Shonali Bose adapted the film from her own novel, and what it is about is the anti-Sikh killings of 1984. The Indian censor board passed it only with six cuts and an adult certificate, the stated reason being not sex or violence but that young people had no need to know this history. A further ten minute cut was demanded before it could be shown on television. Konkona Sen Sharma plays Kaju.
