What Antarctica: A Year on Ice Is About
The documentary follows not the scientists in Antarctica but the people who keep the place running: cooks, firefighters, technicians. Anthony Powell worked at Scott Base for years and built the film out of shooting spread over about a decade, having to make his own camera rigs because standard equipment froze in that cold. Winter sits at the centre: months with no sunrise, no aircraft landing or leaving, and everyone who stayed stuck with each other. The time lapse skies are the best known part of it. As much a record of an isolated community as a nature film.
