What Apart Together Is About
Fifty years ago Liu crossed to Taiwan during the civil war and never saw Qiao again, the woman he left pregnant in Shanghai. Now old, he comes back and finds her; but in the years between Qiao married, raised children and built a whole life. He wants to take her away with him and insists on doing it with the family’s blessing, so two old men, a woman and grown children have to sit at the same table and reckon up fifty years. Wang Quan’an’s ninety seven minute Chinese film tells a large history indoors, around a dinner table. Lisa Lu appears; it was completed in 2010.
