What Apollo: Missions to the Moon Is About
The documentary tells the Apollo programme from beginning to end. There is no presenter; everything comes from the period's own record: the NASA archive, television broadcasts, radio traffic, footage shot in people's homes, newspaper front pages. It opens with the Apollo 1 fire, and runs through Apollo 8's trip around the Moon, the landing of 11, the explosion on 13, and out to the last flight, 17. In between are the astronauts' families and the people who watched it all on television. Tom Jennings directs; ninety-four minutes, produced by National Geographic. This is how Jennings works: he shoots no new interviews and cuts the archive together instead. The effect is that Apollo stands not as an achievement seen from now but as something lived through while the outcome was unknown.
