What As One Is About

The world table tennis championships in Chiba, Japan, 1991. For the first time since the division, North and South Korea enter as a single team under a single flag. Players from both sides will share rooms, train together and have to learn to trust each other. It does not go easily: two groups who have been rivals for years and were taught to see each other as the enemy cannot even talk at first. Moon Hyun-sung's film is based on what actually happened. In the final the women's team beat China, unbeaten for sixteen years, 3-2. Ha Ji-won plays Hyun Jung-hwa from the South and Bae Doona plays Ri Bun-hui from the North. It is less a film about the medal than about what happens once the tournament ends.
