Love Likes Coincidences 2

A romantic comedy set in Turkey. In the first film Özgür and Deniz's lives kept crossing. They were born the same day, ran into the same events, and ended up together. This film has a different couple. Deniz and Özgür's story stays in the background. The narrative is again built on coincidence. Two people keep finding themselves in the same places and one of them runs every time. There is a misunderstanding. A lie set up at the start and a relationship built on top of it. From there the film is a story of avoidance. The characters keep finding chances to tell the truth and use none of them. The family line is running. Parents, relatives, wedding preparations, and everyone with an opinion. The humour rests on situation. The wrong door, the wrong phone, the person arriving at the wrong moment. What the narrative is interested in is not love but a claim about fate: its idea is that two people are made for each other, and that this is proved each time by a coincidence. That is exactly the problem. In the first film coincidence was a structural idea; here it becomes a convenience. The visual language is clean and at the standard of Turkish romantic comedy of the period. There is a great deal of music and it steers the scenes constantly. Being a sequel is both an advantage and a problem. There are connections for anyone who knows the first film; for anyone who does not, the story stands alone but is thin. Ömer Faruk Sorak directed. Nesrin Cavadzade, Yiğit Kirazcı, Elif Doğan and Şebnem Bozoklu are in the cast. Who it is for: anyone who likes Turkish romantic comedy and is curious about the sequel. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the first film's balance; the narrative repeats the same idea and the characters do not hold as well.
