A bored teenager in rural Pennsylvania gets his largely absent father back and asks to be let into the family business. James Foley is less interested in the crimes than in the infatuation. What the boy sees is freedom; what the audience sees is a predator with excellent manners. Christopher Walken plays charm as a direct form of menace, most dangerous when most relaxed. Sean Penn refuses to give admiration a single scene in which it curdles into fear, and lets it leak instead. Drawn from a real criminal family, which explains the film's unusual coldness in its final stretch.
