What Aurore Is About

Quebec, 1920. Aurore Gagnon is ten years old. Her mother has died of illness, her father has remarried, and the child is now living with her stepmother. The village hears what is happening in that house: the teacher, the neighbours, the priest, the doctor. None of them takes it all the way. After Aurore's death the town moves into a courtroom, and everyone has to say what they knew. Luc Dionne's film is based on a real case. The stepmother, Marie-Anne Houde, was first sentenced to death and the sentence was later commuted to life; the father, Télesphore Gagnon, was also convicted. The case has been turned into plays, books and films in Quebec for a century.
