What Ava Is About
Ava is thirteen, on holiday on the Atlantic coast, when she is told she will lose her sight far sooner than anyone expected. Her mother’s answer is to act as though nothing has happened and engineer the best summer of their lives; Ava’s is to steal a large black dog belonging to a young man on the run and take the season somewhere less supervised. In her first feature Léa Mysius treats blindness not as an occasion for sorrow but as a reason to look harder and faster, shooting the coast in colours that keep getting more saturated as the light runs out.
