Bergman Island

A film set on an island in Sweden. Chris and Tony are a couple, both filmmakers. They come to the island of Fårö to work for the summer; it is where Ingmar Bergman lived and made films for years. The island has an order to it: Bergman's house, his grave, the locations and the tours by bus. Tony is comfortable in it; he takes part in talks, answers questions and his writing goes well. Chris is stuck. Her script will not move and the island's arrangement around Bergman unsettles her. One day she starts telling Tony her script, and at that point the film divides. What she tells becomes image: a young woman who comes to the island for a wedding and a man she was with years before. The two narratives fold into each other and which is feeding which becomes uncertain. What the film is interested in is not creativity but what it means to work in an artist's shadow, and whose work counts first in a relationship. Vicky Krieps plays Chris and Tim Roth plays Tony. Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie are in the inner narrative. Mia Hansen-Løve directed. It was actually shot on Fårö. An interesting production for anyone who likes calm narratives and films about cinema. For a viewer looking for plot, the film deliberately leaves both lines unresolved.
