What My Father's Violin Is About
When her father, a street musician, dies, eight year old Ozlem is left alone and handed to an uncle she has never met: Mehmet, a celebrated violinist. Mehmet wants neither the child nor any conversation about his own past, and the entire line of the film is these two closed people finding a shared language, which is inevitably music. Andac Haznedaroglu keeps the emotional register high and never leaves the audience unprepared, so the film asks for surrender rather than surprise. Engin Altan Duzyatan plays Mehmet, Gulizar Nisa Uray the girl, and Belcim Bilgin his wife. Netflix released it on 21 January 2022 and it travelled well beyond Turkey. Who it is for: viewers who like stories of a family closing its distance and Turkish drama played straight at the feelings. Who it is not for: anyone wanting restraint or a story they cannot predict.
