What Baby Doll Is About
Archie Lee runs a cotton gin on the edge of bankruptcy, and his marriage to Baby Doll rests on an agreement: he will not touch her until she turns twenty. She sleeps in a crib and he watches her through a hole in the wall. Silva Vacarro, a rival gin owner, approaches Baby Doll to get back at Archie. Tennessee Williams wrote it and Kazan directed; on release the Catholic church condemned it outright. It is still uncomfortable, though for a different reason: two grown men settling scores through a very young woman who is never asked.
