What Wild River Is About
Tennessee in the thirties. A young official from the government dam authority is sent to move an old woman off an island that is about to be flooded. She will not go, because the land is hers. What really turns the town against him is that he pays Black labourers the same wage as white ones, an unusually direct scene for a Hollywood film in 1960. Elia Kazan shows that progress has a price and that the same people always pay it, and lets nobody be entirely right. The relationship between Montgomery Clift and Lee Remick sits inside that tension. It flopped on release.
