What The River Is About
Renoir's first film in colour, shot entirely in Bengal on the banks of the Ganges. It takes place in the garden of an English family beside the river: three young women are drawn to the same man, an American, Captain John, who has come back from the war having lost a leg, and each of them learns separately what first love is. Adapted from Rumer Godden's novel. Renoir does not use India as exotic scenery; daily life, the river and the seasons are the narrative itself. A child dies partway through and the tone changes from there.
