What French Cancan Is About
Paris in 1889, Montmartre, and the opening of the Moulin Rouge. Jean Gabin plays Danglard, a shrewd impresario trying to make the cancan the fashion of the city while staying upright between two women. This was Jean Renoir's first film made in France since 1939, and he uses colour the way a painter would; the light in these scenes comes straight off the Impressionist palette. Underneath the spectacle it is a film about what putting on a show costs, because there is always somebody being spent behind the joy on stage. The closing cancan remains one of cinema's most alive finales.
