The story of Toni, an Italian among the immigrants looking for work in the quarries and fields of southern France. The life he builds with one woman comes apart over his passion for another, and the whole thing runs as far as a killing. Jean Renoir shot it in Martigues, where the events had actually taken place, mostly with non professional actors, working from a police file on a real crime of passion that a police chief friend had described to him. That is why it gets read as a forerunner of Italian neorealism: he left the studio for the place itself.
