What Fabian: Going to the Dogs Is About

Berlin at the start of the thirties. Jakob Fabian writes advertising copy for a cigarette company by day and spends his nights moving through the city's bars, studios and brothels. He belongs to nothing, tries to remain a moral man, and watches that get him nowhere. He falls in love with Cornelia, and as her acting career opens up, his own road closes. Adapted from Erich Kästner's 1931 novel. Dominik Graf builds the film out of old film stocks, archive footage and abrupt changes of form, showing the last days of Weimar without turning them into nostalgia. Two hours and fifty-six minutes, long with nothing slack in it.
