What The Red Cockatoo Is About
Siggi is a gifted draughtsman who wants to study stage design, and he arrives in Dresden in the spring of 1961 for his first real work at the state theatre. Luise, a young poet, takes him to the Red Cockatoo, an actual dance hall that counted as the first jazz cellar in East Germany, and introduces him to Wolle, her husband. Dominik Graf builds the film around the three of them while a countdown runs underneath everything: the Berlin Wall is four months away. Michael Klier wrote it out of his own memories of the place. What interests the film is less the regime than the moment a door closes on a generation that wanted to dance, and what each of them decides once it has.
