Aashiqui 2 (2013) is the clearest example of a Bollywood film becoming legendary through its music. Rahul is a known singer whose career has collapsed through drink. He hears Aarohi singing in a small bar and decides to make her a star. She rises. He keeps falling. The skeleton comes from A Star Is Born and the film does not hide it. The narrative itself is predictable. What holds the film up is the songs. Tum Hi Ho became one of the most listened to Indian songs of the 2010s on its own, and it built Arijit Singh's career; he was unknown until then. Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari and Jeet Gannguli split the album between them. Both leads were newcomers and the film earned many times its budget. Your odds of running into one of these songs at a wedding or in a car in India are still high. The most honest thing in it is that Rahul does not get better. Alcoholism here is not a problem that love solves. It runs 132 minutes. Good for: Bollywood melodrama, music films, and tragic romance. Less good for: it contains alcoholism and suicide, the sentiment runs high, and you will see where it is going.
