Mohit Suri's film is an uncredited remake of the Korean A Bittersweet Life. Shivam, played by Emraan Hashmi, is the most trusted man of an Indian crime boss in Hong Kong. The boss assigns him to watch his secret mistress; when he finds she is with someone else, what he is supposed to do is obvious, but Shivam does not kill her, and he begins paying for it. Where it departs from the Korean original is Shivam's past. Suri gives the character a lost love and a religious weight of conscience, so that the decision becomes not a cold breach of loyalty but restitution for something he failed to do before. It opened on 29 June 2007 and did not perform. Over the years it acquired a cult and came to be counted among the best work of both Hashmi and Suri, with the music by Pritam and Mustafa Zahid carrying much of that standing. Who it is for: viewers curious about Indian crime melodrama and about adaptations of A Bittersweet Life. Who it is not for: anyone expecting the original's coldness, since this version is emotional and driven by music.
