Malang

The film opens with a man walking out of prison and killing police officers one by one. Who he is and why he is doing it emerges as a love story set in Goa unspools alongside it, years earlier. Mohit Suri keeps crossing the two: drugs, sea and youth on one side, a cold list of targets on the other. Its best element is the corrupt policeman played by Anil Kapoor. The way that character invents his own morality is more interesting than most of what surrounds him. Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani carry the couple's past, with Kunal Kemmu in support. It opened on 7 February 2020 and was a commercial success, taking over eighty crore against a budget of thirty two. The weakness is a lazy script. What it treats as a twist is largely predictable, the woman is the reason for the story rather than an engine in it, and the violence is aestheticised past the point of meaning. Who it is for: fans of Bollywood action thrillers and the music that comes with them. Who it is not for: viewers who want a plot that holds and surprises.
