Ek Villain

Guru is an angry man with a dark past, and Aisha is the woman who teaches him something else about being alive. When she is murdered, he goes after the killer. The film watches both sides at once, since the audience knows from early on who the man is and why he kills. Mohit Suri's film was compared with the Korean I Saw the Devil, and the director said it was not a remake, only that he had borrowed elements. The structure genuinely differs: there is as much melodrama as revenge here, and the violence never goes as far as the Korean film does. The most discussed element was Riteish Deshmukh. Known as a comic actor, he played a villain for the first time, and the ordinariness of the part, a married and thoroughly downtrodden office worker, is what holds the film up. It opened on 27 June 2014 and grossed a hundred and seventy crore worldwide against a budget of thirty nine. Who it is for: fans of Bollywood thrillers with a strong soundtrack. Who it is not for: anyone expecting an original screenplay.
