What Hamari Adhuri Kahani Is About
Mohit Suri's melodrama draws straight from producer Mahesh Bhatt's own family: the story is inspired by the entanglement of his father Nanabhai Bhatt, his mother Shirin Mohammad Ali and his stepmother, which explains why the film is so insistent about guilt rather than romance. Vidya Balan plays a single mother still bound to the name of a husband who vanished, Emraan Hashmi the hotel owner who attaches himself to her, Rajkummar Rao the past that walks back in. The title translates roughly as our unfinished story. It opened in June 2015 to cool reviews, and the songs outlived the picture by years. Who it is for: viewers who accept Bollywood melodrama at full volume. Who it is not for: anyone hoping for restraint.
