What I Carry You with Me Is About
Two men meet in Puebla: Iván, who wants to cook, and Gerardo. Being gay in provincial Mexico puts both Iván's job and his access to his son at risk. In the end he decides to cross into the United States without papers, for New York, and he leaves Gerardo behind. Years pass. Heidi Ewing came out of documentary and mixes both forms here: the early years are played by actors, and the present is filmed as documentary with the real Iván and Gerardo. It happened. What separates it from other films on the subject is that it measures the cost of migration in homesickness. At Sundance in 2020 it won both the audience award and the NEXT Innovator prize.
