Twilight's Kiss

In Ray Yeung's Hong Kong film, Pak, a seventy-year-old taxi driver who refuses to retire, meets Hoi, sixty-five, in a park. Both are gay and have hidden it their whole lives; both care about the families they built and the years of work behind them. That first encounter releases something long suppressed, and the two men begin to consider whether a future together is possible at this age. Yeung wrote the script after reading Travis Kong's oral history work with older gay men and drawing on interviews of his own. The film is not about sex but about loneliness in old age, obligation to family, and choices that cannot be undone. Tai Bo and Ben Yuen are extremely restrained together. Who it's for: viewers looking for the quiet, adult wing of queer cinema. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a dramatic revelation and a clear ending; the film supplies neither.
