All Shall Be Well

Ray Yeung's 2024 Hong Kong film tells the story of two women who lived together for more than forty years, beginning after one of them dies. Pat and Angie's relationship was known to the family; holidays were spent together and Angie was woven into the kinship. When Pat dies suddenly, that changes: Hong Kong law does not recognise same-sex marriage, there is no will, and the flat they shared for over thirty years falls into the inheritance claims of Pat's brother and his children. The family is not openly hostile to Angie; they place her outside their calculations and do it with tact. That is where the film's force lies, in an exclusion that requires no malice. It won the Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival and placed in the Panorama audience award. Who it's for: viewers who like queer cinema and quiet drama about inheritance and grief. Who it's not for: anyone wanting open conflict and a just ending; the film supplies neither.
