In the nineteenth-century Philippines, Spanish colonial rule kept the church closed to local priests; parishes went to Spanish orders and Filipino clergy could not rise. Mariano Gomez, José Burgos and Jacinto Zamora fought that order by legal means. When a military mutiny broke out at Cavite in 1872, the three were accused of instigating it. They were executed that year at Bagumbayan. Pepe Diokno builds the event as a political narrative set in courtrooms and church corridors. The three priests are not symbols; the narrative centres particularly on Burgos, young and determined. How the executions set off Filipino nationalism is covered at the close. Cedrick Juan plays Burgos, Dante Rivero plays Gomez, and Enchong Dee plays Zamora. The film took the most awards at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2023. Who it's for: Anyone interested in Philippine history, colonial-era narratives, and historical drama. Who it's not for: There are many names and institutions for a viewer without the historical context. The execution is also shown directly.
