What The Promised Land Is About
In the mid eighteenth century a retired Danish captain obtains the king's permission to cultivate the Jutland heath, which nobody has managed to farm. In return he wants a title. The local landowner sets out to stop him, and from there the film stops being about agriculture and becomes a very hard struggle over power. The narrative also questions his ambition: the lives of the people he brings with him come to depend on his title. Mads Mikkelsen leads; Nikolaj Arcel directed, adapting Ida Jessen's novel from the life of a real man. A real warning: torture and executions are shown directly. The film also takes in the period's violence against Roma people and does not soften it.
