Graham Moore grew up on the north side of Chicago and won the adapted screenplay Oscar for The Imitation Game. His first film as director is set in 1956 Chicago but was built inside a London theatre, the Troubadour at Wembley Park, where shooting started in March 2021. Mark Rylance spent a week at Huntsman on Savile Row first, helping head cutter Campbell Carey make the three piece suit he wears on screen. Leonard is no tailor either: he takes the measure and cuts the cloth, and the film keeps that distinction at the centre of him. One room does not mean one register. The BBFC gave it a 15, its advice saying shootings and stabbings are accompanied by strong bloodshed, bodies lie in pools of blood, and a gory gunshot wound is stitched in an improvised surgical procedure. It opened at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival out of competition, in the Berlinale Special Gala strand. Made for around five million dollars, it went out to 1,324 American theatres and finished its first weekend eighth. A good fit if you want the balance of who knows what moving every few minutes while the door stays shut. Not for anyone hoping the violence is kept offscreen; talk drives the plot, but the blood is in frame.
