What Till Is About
A film that begins in Chicago in 1955. Mamie lives with her son. She works in a government office and the boy is fourteen. Emmett is going to relatives for the summer. To Mississippi, to the south; his mother is uneasy about it. Seeing him off she instructs him. How to behave, how to look at whom, and when to be quiet. Emmett does not quite understand. He is a boy raised in Chicago and does not know the rules of the south. There is an incident at a shop. Then one night men come to the house. From there the film does not show the murder. The narrative leaves the event outside and looks at what the mother does. The funeral comes. Mamie wants the casket left open; she wants people to see what was done to her son. Photographs are published. The image travels across the country and the case becomes a turning point. Then the trial begins. Mamie goes south and gives evidence. What the narrative is interested in is not the crime but the force of a decision: at its centre is the casket being left open and whose decision that was. The violence is not on screen. The director built that plainly as a choice; the narrative does not turn the pain into spectacle. The use of colour is marked. The Chicago sections are bright and saturated, the southern ones pale and stifling. Danielle Deadwyler's performance carries the film. The long take in the courtroom gives the impression of having been shot in one go. Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison and Whoopi Goldberg are in the cast. Chinonye Chukwu directed and co-wrote. Who it is for: anyone who likes civil rights history and actor-led drama. Who it is not for: anyone who wants to stay away from the subject; even with the event kept off screen the narrative is heavy and closes on injustice.
