What Clemency Is About
Bernadine Williams is a prison warden who has carried out executions for years. The work has eaten her from inside: her marriage is finished, she does not sleep, she cannot explain herself to anyone. Preparing for another execution, she finds a connection forming with the man she is authorised to kill. Chinonye Chukwu directed and took the grand jury prize at Sundance. Alfre Woodard leads and carries almost the whole weight of it. The film is openly against capital punishment but does not turn the argument into a slogan; it looks at what the work does to the person who performs it.
