Sanam Teri Kasam

Saru works in a library; her father is trying to marry her off and every suitor refuses. In the same building lives Inder: just out of prison, hard looking, avoided by everyone. To manage what her father wants, Saru asks him for help. The two grow close. Then Saru is given a diagnosis. Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru direct. Mawra Hocane plays Saru and Harshvardhan Rane plays Inder. The music is by Himesh Reshammiya. The film's own story began long after its release. When it opened in 2016 it failed commercially and the critics did not like it. In the years that followed an audience formed online and on social media, largely through its songs. It was reissued in cinemas in 2025 and took many times what it had made on its first run; a reissue succeeding on that scale is unusual in Indian cinema. The narrative is in the mould of melodrama and keeps no measure anywhere; the emotional emphasis is open to the end. Mawra Hocane is a Pakistani actor and the production became a subject of argument during a tense period between the two countries. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian melodrama and music driven romance. Who it is not for: the illness narrative is formulaic, the characters' decisions are forced, and the ending uses emotional pressure to the last.
