Rockstar

An Indian music drama. Janardhan is an ordinary student in Delhi. He plays guitar and nobody takes him seriously. A man at the canteen tells him something: all great artists have suffered, and he never has. He takes it seriously. He approaches Heer, the most popular girl at the college, planning to be rejected and so to suffer. But she does not reject him and the two become friends. Then something he did not plan for happens: Heer marries and moves to Prague. Janardhan falls apart, is thrown out of his home and tries to survive on the street with music. He changes his name to Jordan. The subject is not fame but anger turning into art. Jordan is recognised on stage while fighting with everyone around him and listening to nobody. The narrative does not run straight; the film opens at a concert at the height of his career and works backwards. The music is by A. R. Rahman and is considered the film's strongest element. Ranbir Kapoor plays Jordan and Nargis Fakhri plays Heer. Shammi Kapoor appears for the last time. Imtiaz Ali directed. A strong example for anyone who likes Indian music films and character studies. For a viewer who wants restraint, the film is long and its emotional pitch stays high.
