What Hamilton Is About
This is not a film adaptation: it is a recording of the Broadway musical on stage. It was filmed in the theatre in 2016 with the original cast, released for streaming in 2020, and given a cinema release for the tenth anniversary in 2025. The subject is Alexander Hamilton: an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean, Washington's aide, Secretary of the Treasury, and a man killed in a duel. The music mixes hip hop, rap and Broadway, and the founding fathers are played by actors of colour. One criticism should be recorded: the show presents Hamilton as more opposed to slavery than the record supports.
