Main Vaapas Aaunga

An Indian film set in Punjab. The year is 1947. The country is being divided and a border is drawn on a map. One village is left right in the middle. The narrative proceeds through people being separated. A woman on one side, the person she loves on the other. A promise is made: there will be a return. From there the film is a story of waiting. Trains, camps, lists, and people nobody can get word of. The migration goes both ways. The narrative does not build it as one side's pain. A family is broken apart. Who is left where stays unclear for months. An old man is at the centre. He carries the past and tells the younger generation what was lost. What the narrative is interested in is not politics but a promise: its idea is that the only thing partition gave people was a promise, and that the promise mostly could not be kept. The music is inside the narrative. A. R. Rahman composed it and the songs work as narration rather than as numbers. Imtiaz Ali had mostly made contemporary love stories; this is his move into period film. Filming began in August 2025 and ended in December 2025. It opened on 12 June 2026 and stayed in cinemas far longer than expected on word of mouth; the worldwide box office passed 88 crore. Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari are in the cast. Imtiaz Ali directed. Who it is for: anyone who likes period drama and stories of partition. Who it is not for: anyone looking for pace; the narrative is long, slow, and builds its emotional weight gradually.
