Love Exposure

The son of a Catholic priest starts sinning to satisfy his father's obsession with confession. He becomes expert at secretly photographing under women's skirts, then meets the girl he believes is the love of his life while dressed as a woman. The film runs four hours and fills them by piling religion, sexuality, family and a cult on top of each other. The narrative keeps changing register: absurd comedy in one scene, a serious account of abuse in the next. The imbalance is deliberate and is why it became a cult film. Sion Sono wrote and directed. It was made independently in Japan. A real warning: the film is about sexual abuse, cult violence and photographing people without consent, and it shows all of it at length. It means to disturb for four hours. It is not a light watch.
