What Reaching for the Moon Is About
In 1951 the American poet Elizabeth Bishop travels to Rio to visit a friend from college and meets her friend's partner, the architect Lota de Macedo Soares. The relationship between the shy poet and the confident architect lasts fifteen years, a third woman never leaves the stage, and the military coup of 1964 undermines all of it. Lota was a real person who designed Rio's great waterfront park, and Bishop won a Pulitzer. Adapted from Carmen L. Oliveira's book, the film stays faithful to what actually happened to both women and looks for no easy way out.
