Me Before You

Thea Sharrock's 2016 film follows Lou, who needs work. She is hired as a carer for Will, paralysed after an accident. Will has decided to end his life and his family have given him six months. The film builds the relationship as a romance; the narrative makes changing his mind Lou's task, and the close was argued over. Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin lead. It is adapted from a novel. On release the film was criticised by disability rights advocates, the objection being that it presents a life with paralysis as not worth living. Who it's for: those who like romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with assisted death and disability handled in this frame.
