A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember (2002) is a love story that starts in a high school and quickly goes somewhere else. Landon is popular and careless. After an incident he is made to appear in the school play as a punishment. Jamie is in it: the pastor's daughter, who wears the same cardigan every day, keeps to herself, and is mocked at school. The first half is a story of change. Landon learns she has a list: things she wants to do in her life. Then the film's real information arrives and the story becomes something other than a romance. Jamie explains why she is in a hurry. It is adapted from Nicholas Sparks's novel. Sparks wrote it drawing on his own sister's illness. Mandy Moore was a pop singer at the time and performed the songs in the film herself; they charted independently of it. It outperformed expectations in cinemas and stayed with the young audience of the early two thousands. Religion is a direct part of the story and the film does not hide it. The sentiment runs high and the ending is hard. It runs 101 minutes. Good for: teenage romance, Sparks adaptations, and the early two thousands. Less good for: the illness material is heavy, the ending hurts, and the characters stay close to type.
