Dil Bechara

Kizie is in her twenties and has thyroid cancer; she carries an oxygen cylinder and cannot go to school. At a support group she meets Manny. He lost a leg to his illness, turns everything into a joke, and wants to make a film. The two become friends and set out on something together: Kizie wants to find the end of an unfinished song, and for that they have to go to Paris. Mukesh Chhabra directs. Sushant Singh Rajput plays Manny and Sanjana Sanghi plays Kizie. The source is John Green's novel, which had been filmed in America before. It is Rajput's last film. The actor died in 2020 and the film was released free on a streaming platform shortly afterwards; it was watched by an extraordinary number of people in India. Mukesh Chhabra worked for years as a casting director and this is his first film as director; he had cast Rajput in his first film as well. The narrative follows the structure of the novel with small changes in moving it to India; the music is by A. R. Rahman. Its limit is being an adaptation; the narrative runs on a known line and the emotional emphasis is open to the end. Rajput's performance carries the film and also determined how it is watched; it is no longer seen apart from its own story. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian melodrama and youth films adapted from novels. Who it is not for: it is predictable, the emotional pressure is high, and there is nothing new for anyone who knows the original.
