My Oxford Year

Anna, an American, goes to Oxford for a year to study Victorian poetry. The man who splashes her with his car turns out to be the first Englishman she meets, then her tutor, then her boyfriend. Then Jamie's aggressive genetic cancer surfaces, and the film pushes Anna to choose between a career in New York and staying. It is adapted from Julia Whelan's novel, with Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest leading and Iain Morris directing. Netflix released it on 1 August 2025. Critics were harsh: only 31 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus calling it pretty to look at but dramatically inert. Metacritic gave it 39. The viewing numbers went the other way entirely. It went to number one worldwide on Netflix and became the platform's fourth most-watched film of all time with 158.8 million views. Who it is for: viewers who want Oxford scenery, poetry quotations and a guaranteed cry. Who it is not for: anyone tired of the terminal illness romance. The film never once breaks the template.
