Kal Ho Naa Ho

An Indian film set in New York. Naina is studying business and does not laugh. Her father killed himself, her mother runs a restaurant, and the house is permanently tense. A man moves in across the street. Aman talks to everyone, interferes in everyone's business, and quickly changes the order of the house. Naina falls in love with him. Aman knows and does not respond. He has a serious heart condition and knows his life has shortened; he tells nobody. From there the film is a story of steering. Aman tries to bring Naina together with his closest friend Rohit and advises each of them separately. What the narrative is interested in is not a triangle but time: the title says so, and the idea that there may be no tomorrow is repeated throughout. The family line is the second subject. There is a secret hidden in Naina's house that her mother has carried for years; when it opens the household changes completely. The tone is comedy in the first half. In the second the film turns entirely and nothing is lightened. The songs are inside the narrative and the title track is its best known section. The screenplay and production are by Karan Johar; Nikkhil Advani is in the director's chair for the first time. The music is by the trio Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Jaya Bachchan are in the cast. Who it is for: anyone who likes classical Indian melodrama and songs. Who it is not for: anyone uncomfortable with emotional steering; the film does not stop in the last half hour.
