What The Teacher Who Promised the Sea Is About
In 1935 the Catalan teacher Antoni Benaiges is posted to a small village in the province of Burgos, bringing a method imported from France: the children will set and print their own books on their own press. He makes a promise to children who have never seen the sea, that he will take them there in the holidays. The civil war comes and Benaiges is killed by Falangists. Patricia Font runs two timelines, 1935 and, seventy-five years later, Ariana arriving to watch the excavation of the mass grave at Monte de la Pedraja. The source is Francesc Escribano's book. The notebooks the children printed are real and still exist, which is the film's most shattering piece of evidence. Who it is for: viewers who want drama about the Spanish civil war and the history of teaching. Who it is not for: anyone needing a hopeful ending.
