Bach and Broccoli

A young girl is left an orphan when the grandmother who raised her goes into a nursing home. She is sent to live with her uncle, an organist obsessed with Bach who is preparing for an important recital. The man’s order and the child’s presence do not fit from the start; the house, the hours of practice and the silence all become matters to be negotiated again. The film does not hurry the two into getting used to each other and puts neither the adult nor the child in the wrong. Music stands inside the account as real work, not as decoration. It is among the known examples of Canadian cinema made for a family audience. Mahee Paiement and Raymond Legault appear in Andre Melancon’s ninety six minute Canadian film, completed in 1986.
