In the Poland of the nineties Tomek lives alone with his mother, because his father Alek went to the United States to earn money. One day the man turns up unannounced with an armful of presents and tells nobody why he has come back. Everyone looks happy, and yet there is something in the air of the house. As the father starts drinking the boy’s world narrows, and what a child understands and does not understand moves to the centre of the film. The account builds no large events; it shows how fear works its way into daily life. Maciej Stuhr appears in Konrad Aksinowicz’s hundred and nine minute Polish film, completed in 2021.
