A street fight goes wrong, a teenager is sent to juvenile detention, and inside he will meet someone with every reason to hate him. Worth saying up front: this has nothing to do with the buddy cop comedy of the same name from 1995. It is a hard, drab institutional drama. One of Sean Penn's first substantial leads, and he manages not to present the character's toughness as heroism. The detention scenes show the hierarchy rather than explaining it, through who sits where and who is allowed to speak. The violence is filmed to exhaust rather than excite.
