A man imprisoned young in Los Angeles comes to lead an organisation formed inside the prison. Years later, when he gets out, the outside is run by the order he built. The film does not make the organisation attractive; the narrative shows the leader trapped inside his own structure and the violence coming back. The prison sequences are shot with a documentary coldness. Edward James Olmos directed and stars. Threats over what the film depicts were raised after production and the matter was argued over for years. A real warning: the film shows rape, torture and many killings. The violence is unadorned and some scenes are hard to sit through.
