What Baden Baden Is About
Ana is twenty-six, and the moment her job as a runner on a film shoot in Belgium ends she goes back to Strasbourg, the city she grew up in. What she will do for the summer is undecided. She finds herself a task: to rip out the bathtub in her grandmother's bathroom and have a floor-level shower put in instead. The old woman struggles to get in and out of the tub. Ana knows nothing about this kind of work but is determined to do it. It is Rachel Lang's first feature and the third film about the character Ana; she had told the same woman's story in two earlier shorts. The story builds no plot; jobs, lovers, family and that bathtub all move along side by side and none of them resolves. Salomé Richard plays Ana and Claude Gensac the grandmother. The Baden Baden of the title is a town in Germany known for its thermal baths, and water keeps seeping from one place to another throughout the film. Ninety-five minutes.
